Abbey Wood in KENT

ABBEY WOOD: Early flying ground       (also sometimes spelt as ABBEYWOOD)

NOTES: In 1910 a Mr G A Barnes is listed as being an “experimenter” working with a monoplane here. Unfortunately it appears not to have been recorded beyond reasonable doubt if his machine actually flew or even hopped. However, the general assumption according to C C Turner in his fabulous book The Old Flying Days was that it did. I have a copy of this book and it does not give a date for publication, but, given some research I would guess around 1927?

The great thing about this book was that, working as a journalist in the 'early days' he had met all the classic men of aviation, and therefore his memories were still quite fresh.

ABBEYWOOD is roughly 2nm ENE of Woolwich town centre.
