Aber
Note: This map only gives a rough estimate of where this airfield might have been situated. If anybody can kindly offer advice on this it will be much appreciated.
ABER: Military aerodrome (aka ABERGWYGREGYN?)
Military users: WW1: RFC (Royal Flying Corps)
255 Sqdn (Airco DH.6s)
Location: Between Penhryn Castle, (NW of Bangor), and Abergwyngregyn, presumably nearer to Abergwygregyn hence the abbreviation to ‘ABER’. Therefore ENE to NE of Bangor, but is the location now known?
Period of operation: About 1918?
NOTES: It seems that 255 Sqdn were based for a short time at the Royal Naval Airship Station at LLANGEFNI on Angelsey, engaged in Special Duties Flights such as anti-submarine patrols across the Irish Sea and in towards Liverpool.
As the resolve was lacking to construct a suitable airfield at LLANGEFNI the squadron was transferred back to a more suitable site on the mainland - it appears this one! I will readily admit to not having the time to delve at length into military records.
There are books galore on military aviation history so I’d assumed many, if not hundreds of others had done this already. But why I wonder, in a situation like this, isn’t the exact location known? Surely the military kept precise records of their landing sites?
Perhaps they did, but it might take several people pretty much their life to research every nook and cranny. Or of course, perhaps the airfield was known by another name? This is often the case.
