ALTON: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: On the 24th April 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour displayed in/near Alton. Is the location they used now known? On the 16th April 1934 Cobham’s Tour visited Alton as did the 1935 display on the 28th June.

After hearing reports from other pilots, I looked for a possible strip just north of Blacknest, near Alton in about 1999 and sure enough it was there. It was on the edge of a golf course about 2 miles south east of Alton and from the morth, you could also see the strip at Frensham about 2 miles away and on the same alignment. There is no sign of it now, but there was a Cessna high wing parked there when I found it.

Re: Alton/Blacknest. Looking at the historical Google Earth images, it appears that an airstrip was in use between 2005 and 2008, in the field immediately to the south of the Blacknest golf course approx 7km NORTH-east of Alton, not South-east, but indeed same orientation as the nearby Frensham airstrip. Earlier and later images just show a plain field, so I'm not sure about the 1999 claim (nearest Google Earth has is 2000 and an airstrip is not evident in this image).
