Alton Barnes

ALTON BARNES: Military aerodrome

Military user: RAF Training Command          50 Group

Central Flying School

29 EFTS  (Elementary Flying Training School)

Location: 5nm E of Devizes

Period of operation: 1935 to 1947

Runways: N/S   749   grass           NE/SW   1005   grass
                  E/W   795   grass          NW/SE   795   grass

NOTES: When operational up to ten Blister hangars were used. However, it appears that no squadron was actually based here.

It appears that the Central Flying School at UPAVON used this airfield up until 1941. Presumably for, given the amount of hangars, detached courses or similar. In 1941 it was then transferred to 29 EFTS based at CLYFFE PYPARD. It could of course been during their tenure that the blister hangars were installed?
