Astley Grange

ASTLEY GRANGE: Civil temporary aerodrome and/or private airstrip?

Operated by: Shrewsbury Aerodromes Ltd

Location: In Upper Battlefield roughly 2.5nm NNE of Shrewsbury town centre, in a triangle formed by the A49 & A53

Period of operation: 1933 to 1935 only?

Flying Club: Shropshire Aviation Club

NOTES: Venue for the 1935 Jubilee Air display.

The reason for the question mark as to exactly what this site was is simple. The well known locally Greenhous family had a BAC Super Drone G-AEJL kept in a ‘shed’ or ‘hangar’ at ASTLEY - a photograph exists of it assembled with the engine running in front of the ‘shed’.

As things stand though, it seems difficult to prove this was also the ASTLEY GRANGE site used by the last Alan Cobham NAD tour, Shropshire Aviation Club etc. Consequently the possibility that there were two aviation sites in this area has to be considered. Could anybody kindly offer advice on this?
