MORE MEMORIES IN THIS AREA
In November 2020 I was kindly contacted by Mr Baz Manning. Regarding the BARTON STACEY training grounds, he tells us that in the 1980s he frequently used the A34 and in the fields to the west of the Sutton Scotney northbound service area he often saw a Gazelle from MIDDLE WALLOP hovering. On one occassion, he cannot remember when, he saw very many Gazelles and Lynxes, all from MIDDLE WALLOP, there all afternoon, obviously engaged on a major exercise.

I think '42' consisted of '19' Topo Sqdn, and '22 Map Sqdn. I have to say I enjoyed my stay in 'B' camp. The walk to 'The Plough' in Long Parish for a jar with May and (I forget the landlords name) and there talking Mynah bird. I think we were responsible for teaching it language that we should not have. !! It was finally banished to the back room !! Anyway. 1965 saw me posted to FARELF and Barton Stacey became just a memory. I notice via Google Map that the camp has gone, along with our accommodation, but the 'square' is still where I remember it. Good times, with good mates. Phil Horn.

My dad was in the Royal Artillery and just finished a tour in Hong Kong. We moved from Barton to Bramcote near Nuneaton. I can remember my mum always saying she wanted a Mynah Bird, so now I know where she got the idea from... we ended up in Germany and my dad bought her a budgie. If anyone has any info on why the RA were stationed in Barton I'd like to hear from you. Nigel

Bought my first Premium Bonds at the post office , in a wooden, smelly shack between B & C camps. I remember the 10 mile bashes from Hurstbourne Tarrant down past the Watercress ponds. I left in 74 with an offer of a union card and a printing job-too good to turn down. I have been back to the barren site of the old camps and collected comkers under the old chestnut tree that used to stand next to the gym. 70 now so probably never see the old place again..
