Bewley Down
BEWLEY DOWN: Experimental flying site
NOTES: It appears that John Stringfellow who was developing steam-powered flying models in nearby CHARD brought a model of the Aerial Steam Carriage with a 20ft span to BEWLEY DOWN in 1847. It seems he couldn’t get it to fly, (but the engine worked well), but at least one later model did fly. See CHARD and HYDE PARK (Crystal Palace) and CREMORNE GARDENS in LONDON for more details.
