Military users: WW2 RAF Bomber Command           7 Group

1668 HCU  [Heavy Conversion Unit]   (Avro Lancasters)

207 Sqdn   (Avro Manchesters later Lancasters)

467 (Royal Australian Air Force) Sqdn    (Lancasters)

1524 BATF [Blind Approach Training Flight]   (Airspeed Oxfords)

USAAF 9th Air Force           50th Troop Carrier Wing

436 & 440 TCG

Location:  Just NE of Normanton on the A607, roughly 6nm NW of Grantham

Period of operation: 1941 to 1945 (Later civil use)

Runways: WW2: 03/21   1737x46   hard           09/27   1280x46   hard
                         15/33   1363x46   hard

NOTES: There is evidence that a 500 metre strip 01/19, (presumably part of WW2 runway 03/21or perhaps a taxiway), was being used as late as 2002.

It seems, (even according to official records in late 1944), that there was some doubt as to whether this aerodrome was either in LEICESTERSHIRE or LINCOLNSHIRE. Possibly it straddled the County boundaries?

A MOST UNUSUAL FEATURE

This picture was obtained from Google Earth ©. It was Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' who pointed out this feature which appeared on the northern end of the WW2 airfield in around 2020/21. I have never seen anything like it, and presumably there was a reason?
