Cairncross

CAIRNCROSS: Military Landing Ground & temporary Marine Operations Station    (Aka RESTON)

Military users: RFC/RAF  (Royal Flying Corps, later Royal Air Force)

77 [Home Defence] Sqdn   (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 and B.E.12 types)

RAF Marine Operations Station

Location: E of Cairncross and NE of Reston on the A1, roughly 8nm NW of Berwick-upon-Tweed

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area: 115 acres       914 x 686

NOTES: Here again possibly an example of more military antics which appear to make little if any sense. It appears that this site became a Marine Operations Station from June to August 1918. Why on earth did they expend the effort, let alone cost, for such a brief period?

Then again of course, perhaps this 'Station' consisted of nothing more than a couple tents - or something similar.
