NOTES: The French aviator, Henri Salmet, had already made a name for himself before he was hired by the Daily Mail newspaper to make a tour of much of the U.K. in the summer of 1912. This tour, in effect, elevated him to 'super star' status and he was féted wherever he appeared. Mostly he visited seaside resorts, which meant that quite often his two-seater Blériot monoplane was fitted with floats. After making his display, he would invariably, if the conditions were suitable, take fare paying passengers for a local flight.
There were, especially in the earlier part of the Tour, quite a few misadventures and en route diversions, usually wind strength and weather related. But it appears, very few forced landings due to engine problems. Prior to making an appearance here he had previously made an 'exhibition of flying' at Gravesend. Most unusually, along the way from Gravesend, he made an impromptu display around Herne Bay and landed in a field on UNDERDOWN FARM just south of Herne Bay town centre. (See seperate listing).
