CARLISLE CASTLE: Balloon ascent launching site
Operated by: Mr Charles Green
Location: The Parade Ground within the Castle
Period of operation: September 1825
CARLISLE: Temporary aerodrome
Operated by: The Berkshire Aviation Co
Location: The junction of High Cummersdale and Dalston Roads
Period of operation: 2nd to 19th February 1920
NOTES: The aircraft was Avro 504K G-EAIB, flown initially by Alan J Cobham. No need to ask “whatever happened to him” then! However, Oscar Philip Jones did most of the flying after Cobham returned by train to London, carrying 384 of the over 400 people flown during this visit.
CARLISLE: Temporary aerodrome?
NOTES: On the 20th July 1933 Sir Alan Cobham’s No.1 Tour displayed in/near Carlisle. Is it now known exactly where this event was held? The same question applies to the venue for Cobham’s 1934 Tour which displayed in/near Carlisle on the 28th April.
CARLISLE RACECOURSE: Company/corporate helipad/helicopter landing area
Location: 2nm S of Carlisle town centre
Landing area(s): 1998, primary landing site is level grass area 110x80m alongside stands. Larger area available on request
NOTES: The aviation history of this site appears to go way back, (assuming it’s the same racecourse location?), as Gustav Hamel gave some ‘exhibition’ flights at Carlisle ‘Blackhall’ racecourse in August 1912. Hamel was one of six pilots engaged by the Daily Mail to tour the country giving ‘exhibition’ flights.
