Carr Valley

CARR VALLEY: Microlight/Ultralight airstrip

Operated by: South Ribble Sport Flying Club

Location: S of Much Hoole on the A59, 3.5nm W of Leyland

Period of operation: 2005 to –

Runways: 09/27   350x21   grass          11/20   370x27   grass

NOTES: Apparently set up originally under the “28 day rule”, and in 2005 planning permission was soon being sought to establish this airfield on a more permanent basis. Did it succeed?

I assume it did because in Light Aviation magazine in 2010 I noticed a news item stating that, “Proceeds from the fly-in at Carr Valley Airfield, Bretherton near Chorley on Saturday, 19 June will be donated to Derian House Children’s Hospice in Chorley.”

Then again, a search on the 'inter-web' shows that a lot of opposition was being made to prevent this airfield being established on a more permanent basis.

Even today there is still a popular conception in the UK that most private pilots belong to the rich and privileged ‘play-boy’ class but nothing could be further from the truth. The majority come from a mainly middle class background (?) but there are lots of tradesmen and similar within the ranks. In my experience these latter people are usually the most enthusiastic of flyers, and, many of these people organise events in their spare time to raise money by holding a multitude of various types of events for charitable causes.
