CASTLE YARD: Early balloon ascent venue

Aerial view

Note:  This picture (2016) was obtained from Google Earth ©

As can be seen, virtually nothing of the castle can be seen - at least not in an aerial photograph.

NOTES: On the 19th of June 1876 Monsieur St Croix made the first balloon ascent in Exeter. Using a 76ft diameter balloon he claims to have ascended to 19,000ft before a rent in the fabric caused a sudden descent landing in the Parish of Cadbury, a small village just S of the A3072 roughly 7nm N of Exeter city centre. If you can find a full account of this flight it is well worth reading, especially when at considerable altitude the balloon envelope started to tear apart!

CASTLE YARD does not seem to appear on modern maps.
