Castle Mill

Note: Some time ago I made this comment: "I do believe I have this location pinned down, the bridge over the river Great Ouse seems the best clue? However the area has changed so drastically in recent years it seems hard to be certain. Could anybody be kind enough to confirm this location?"

In February 2018 I was kindly contacted by NM, (see 'Comment' below), and the previous map has now been amended.

Hi I have Bedford Castle Mill having to ICAO codes GAFY pre 1960 and EGSB post 1960, which implys there was an airfield here from the 1950's. I am researching these pre 1960 codes and there are some quite obscure airfields with them Kind regards John Taylor

Reply from Dick Flute:
Hi John, Many thanks for this information. I will keep your comment posted. I am astonished that Castle Mills had an ICAO code - let alone two! Best regards, Dick

Dick and John Bedford Castle Mill was located here: 52.141034, -0.411448 on google maps - slightly east of Goldington. It was the pair of fields south of the Ouse and both are now a quarry site. Hope that helps.

Reply from Dick Flute:
Dear NM, Many thanks indeed. I shall amend the map. Best regards, Dick

Neville Rogers operated G-AMYR Auster J/5G Autocar from 11.5.53 to 3.56 replaced 21.6.56 with Auster Alpine J/5R till 7.61 . Its highly likely that he based them here to commute to Cranfield.
