Catfoss
CATFOSS: Military aerodrome
Note: This picture (2018) was obtained from Google Earth ©
This is another example of how much of the airfield has survived and can clearly be seen some sixty years later.
Military users: WW2: RAF Flying Training Command 25 Group
Central Gunnery School (Spitfires & ?)
RAF Coastal Command 16 Group
No.2 OTU (Avro Ansons & Bristol Blenheims)
Location: E of A165, NE of Brandesburton, W to NW of Catfoss Grange, 4nm W of Hornsea
Period of operation: 1932 to 1963
Runways: WW2: 01/19 1600x46 hard 06/24 1426x46 hard
11/29 1563x46 hard
NOTES: In late 2009 I found a mention in the Flight magazine archives that in 1936 RAF CATFOSS would occupy 50 acres. The hard runways were surely added in mid WW2?
In March 2023 I was kindly sent this map by Mr.Michael Forth. It comes from one of his father's Course notes when he was a student here from 02.06.45 until 09.07.45, serving with No.66 Course, Central Gunnery School. It appears the CGS was only based here in 1944 and 1945.
SOMETHING UNUSUAL?
Michael Forth's father only recorded in his Log Book the last two letters of the Vickers Supermarine Spitfire Vs he flew, not the serial number. This being common enough at the CGS it seems. Michael has kindly provided a list, so take a deep breath:
DA, DB, DC, DF, DG, DH, DK, DL, DN, DR, and DS. Possibly with the prefix 'V'?
Also; EA, EB, EC, EF, EH, EJ, EK, EM, EN, EP, ES, EY and EZ.
Lastly: FE, FJ, FL, FO, FQ, FT, FV and FX. Is there some method by which these can be married up with the aircraft serials?
When flying dual in the Miles Master II, he simply notes, numbers 3 and 18. Can anybody kindly explain what this might mean?
