Chadderton

Note: This map only gives the position of Chadderton within the UK. If anybody can kindly give a more exact location, this will be most welcome.

CHADDERTON: Military aerodrome (also known as OLDHAM)

Location: Just N of the M60, W of the B6393, WSW of Chadderton and about 5nm NNW to NW of Manchester city centre

Site area: 212 acres       1006 x 1097

NOTES: Yet another example of an airfield “all dressed up but with nowhere to go”. It appears this aerodrome was intended to be an Aircraft Acceptance Park for the USAAS to flight test American built Handley Page 0/400s to be assembled at Gorse Mill in Chadderton and Lilac Mill in Shaw. Although apparently “ready to go” it seems the Armistice intervened before this aerodrome became fully operational.

Also, could this site be where Avro later established a major factory during WW2?
