Note the private airstrip alongside to the east.

Military user: RN  (Royal Navy)

Activities: Flying training commanded by (HMS Heron) YEOVILTON

Location: 4nm SW of Wincanton, 1nm WNW of Charlton Hawthorne village

Period of operation: 1942 to 1948

Runways:    NE/SW  1097   grass          NW/SE   822   grass

NOTES: Now situated in SOMERSET.

It must be remembered that aerodromes in WW2 were invariably named after the nearest telegram facility. This explains why the aerodrome often appears to be quite a distance away compared to nearer villages.
