Chatsworth House
CHATSWORTH HOUSE: Air show venue
NOTES: For a great many years air shows have been held at venues which are not associated with an airfield and on the weekend of 30th August – 1st September 2013 at Chatsworth House air shows were planned including ascents by hot-air balloons and the Red Arrows. Generally speaking though, air shows such as this inland site, not taking place over an airfield, are greatly outnumbered by seafront air shows.
As an example of how many air shows are held at non-airfield locations, here are the listings for August 2013:
10-11 Whitstable (Kent) including BBMF (A fly-past by the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight)
10-12 Whitby (Yorkshire) Regatta events including a Red Arrows display
11-12 Blackpool (Lancashire) Sea Front Air Show
14 Minehead (Somerset) Sea Front Air Show
14 Ilfracombe (Devon) Rescue Day Emergency Services display
15-18 Eastbourne (Sussex) Sea Front Air Show including Red Arrows
20-21 Cromer (Norfolk) Sea Front Air Show
22-23 Clacton (Essex) Sea Front Air Show, including Red Arrows
23-25 Laverstoke (Hampshire) Hants Car Fest South, including Vulcan display and BBMF
24 Dawlish (Devon) Sea Front Air Show
24-26 Dettling (Kent) Showground Military Odyssey Show, plus air display
Note: DETTLING was of course once an operational airfield.
25-26 Uffington (Oxfordshire), White Horse Country Show including BBMF
29-31 Dartmouth (Devon) Regatta Sea Front Air Show, including Red Arrows
29-1st Sept. Bournemouth (Hampshire) Sea Front Air Show, including Red Arrows
31-1st Sept. Portrush (Northern Ireland) Sea Front Air Show, including Red Arrows
It was claimed that in the early 2000s air shows drew much larger crowds than football matches, and I for one would certainly like to believe this was true. But how were these figures calculated? Who for example could possibly determine if the crowds at the Dettling event, in Kent, were primarily more interested in the military vehicles than the air display? Likewise with the air show at Clacton in Essex.
For many, without much doubt, being on holiday in Clacton, which has become a delightful family seaside resort, the air show was a diversion or added attraction. Not the reason for visiting Clacton.
