CHELMSFORD: Temporary aerodrome

Operated by: Alan Cobham

Location: ?
Note: Rather oddly perhaps I have managed to find sites for other 'Flying Circus' operators visiting Chelmsford, but not the venue for this visit by the Cobham tour in 1929. If anybody can kindly give advice on this location, this will be much appreciated.

Period of operation: 14th August 1929

NOTES: Some of you might well be wondering why I should even bother to list a temporary landing site that operated for one day only. The reason is simple and even though they were invariably very short visits the sites used by the 'Flying Circus' operators from the late 1920s were officially licensed - even if used for just one day.

Indeed, initially the site had to be inspected by men from the Ministry before a license was granted, and quite often operating restrictions were put in place. Later, the more trustsworthy operaters, (at least?), were allowed to be self-licensing. These events invariably attracted huge crowds.

Alan Cobham persuaded many local councils around the UK that they should seriously consider having an aerodrome at least and preferably an airport. He didn’t succeed with Chelmsford but quite a few did if they had any vision. Chelmsford was not convinced.

CHELMSFORD: Private airstrip

Operated by: 1992: Mr M Darlington

Location: Near Chelmsford

Period of operation: 1990s only?

Runway: E/W   400x16   grass

NOTES: Clearly I have very little information on this strip. If anybody can kindly provide more advice, this will be much appreciated.
