Chesterton House
CHESTERTON HOUSE: Private airstrip or airfield
Note: The first two pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: Mr Derek J Jammett
Location: Just NE of Worfield village. About 5nm NE of Bridgnorth town centre and roughly 8nm W of Wolverhampton town centre
Period of operation: Not known but perhaps 1949 to 1954?
Runway(s): Not known? Possibly 04/22 520 grass? Perhaps also: 18/36 640 grass
NOTES: I can take no credit at all for this - or blame! We have Mr Graham Frost to thank, who is a great friend of this 'Guide' who tells us that this field was used.
As is well known, during very dry periods pre-existing features, right back to Roman times and before, often show up in the landscape. As the two pictures above appear to show, quite clearly a 04/22 strip, and possibly a 18/26 strip, I have used this 'evidence' to give some idea of the runway lengths.
What we do know, is that Mr D J Jemmett had the Percival P.28 Proctor 1, G-AHUX, (ex P6185), registered to this address from 16.02.49 until 25.04.54. It was sold to Australia as VH-BGY on 13.05.55. What we don't know, is if it was based here? As always, if anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be much appreciated.
