CHINNOR FIELD: Gliding satellite site and model flying
Note: The aerial view was obtained from Google Earth ©. The area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Used by: Booker Gliding Club, and, The High Wycombe & District Model Aircraft Club
Location: N of the M.40 “Stokenchurch Gap” on the escarpment of the Chiltern Hills, and N to NW of junction 6 on the M.40. WSW of Chinnor.
Period of operation: Late 1960s to early 1980s
NOTES: Quite why this was known as CHINNOR FIELD seems lost in the mists of time. Except of course that it was simply an accurate description of the site, which was a field easy to identify and land on, and, Chinnor village is just to the NE.
It appears that the main reason for an agreement with the farmer to use this field was to enable ridge gliding and, as powered tugs often visited to fly the glders out and back to BOOKER (WYCOMBE AIR PARK), it is rumoured the farmer liked to think the aircraft noise created would upset a neighbouring farmer he wasn’t friends with; so the two purposes suited everybody perfectly.
When flying stopped a new and very demanding site, (even for the most experienced pilots), was briefly used on top of the Chiltern ridge just N of the M.40 for a year or two. It seems that gliding from CHINNOR FIELD took place roughly only two to three times a month and I presume, only in the spring to autumn seasons?
