Church Norton

Note: This map only shows my estimation of where this location was. If anybody can confirm this, or provide a more exact position, this advice will be most welcome.

CHURCH NORTON: Temporary aerodrome based at an existing Landing Ground?

Operated by: Alan Cobham’s 1935 No.1 Tour?

Location: 1.5nm NE of Selsey, E of the B2145.

Note: A map in the 1930s ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’ clearly shows that this Landing Ground was situated immediately N of Church Norton, then more a hamlet than village. But, did the Cobham Tour actually use this site? This cannot be taken for granted as the 'Flying Circus' operators always sought the best financial deal, often deciding to operate from fields next door to an established fliyng site.

Today this landing ground site is possibly either below water according to modern maps, and part of a wildlife reserve, or, (more likely?), has been overtaken by the expansion of the village?

Period of operation: 2nd September 1935 for Cobhams ‘show’. Landing Ground….1930s only?

Runways: A.A. Landing Ground:  SW/NE   549   grass         NW/SE   732   grass
                                                  NNE/SSW   530   grass

NOTES: Looking now at the general size and layout of this airfield, was this the site of the WW1 aerodrome rather than the RAF SELSEY ALG site listed later on?

They could of course all be the same site.
