Note: This map only gives the position of Clawdd-Newydd village within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location for this airstrip, this advice will be most welcome.



CLAWDDNEWYDD: Private airstrip    (Also spelt CLAWDD-NEWYDD)

Location: In/near Clawddnewydd village, on the B5105 about 4.5nm SW of Ruthin

Period of operation: From 1990s?

 

Runway: 250 metre field, possibly ‘all-over’ directions for landing and take-off?


 

NOTES: Information about this strip came from Light Aviation magazine. It appears that Mr Parry has been operating a Mainair Flash weight-shift microlight from the field adjacent to his home for many years but then decided to build, from plans, a Team Mini-MAX three-axis microlight which was built under the auspices of the Light Aviation Association. He built it in a well equipped garage-workshop at his home, and, registered G-CGGX it has now flown many hours, performing faultlessly.

Although ‘only’ powered by a 37hp Rotax 447 engine it appears the Mini-MAX takes-off in just 35m with a 900fpm rate of climb. Fitted with an enclosed cockpit this aircraft is undoubtably more comfortable to fly than the Mainair Flash. I mention all this to illustrate that all over the UK determined and dedicated people are building their own aircraft, (and have done for decades of course), many operating them from their own private strips.

Incidentally the term ‘private airstrip’ covers a very wide range of sites ranging from just a field, probably with a single mown grass strip and windsock up to ‘aerodromes’ with two or more runways, clubhouse, several hangars and up to thirty aircraft, perhaps more.
