Cliff End

CLIFF END: Military Landing Ground

Military users: RAF  (Royal Air Force)

78 [Home Defence] Sqdn       (Sopwith Camels and possibly Sopwith 1½ Strutters)

SACCDB (School for Aerial Co-operation with Coastal Defence Batteries)

Location: SW of Norton, roughly Inm W of Yarmouth

Period of operation: 1918

Site area: 18 acres       320 x 183

NOTES: I find it rather surprising just how small some WW1 Landing Grounds were and this is an excellent example. Today of course such a site would probably be restricted to use by microlights or perhaps STOL aircraft like Piper Cubs etc. In those days of course even front-line fighter types used them!
