Clifford Chambers
Note: This map is only my estimation of the location. If anybody could be kind enough to provide an exact position, this advice will be
CLIFFORD CHAMBERS: Civil Landing Ground (Aka MILCOTE HALL)
Operated by: Mr J A Griffin
Location: 2.5nm ESE to SE of Stratford-upon-Avon, just NW of Clifford Chambers
Period of operation: 1930s only?
Runways: WSW/ENE 503 grass NNW/SSE 366 grass
NOTES: Listed in 1930s ‘A.A. Register of Landing Grounds’ with no hangarage available.
Fuel and transport (the latter typically a taxi service) were available from Warwickshire County Garage and a telephone was available at the owners house. Hotel accommodation was listed as the Shakespere Hotel, Welcombe Hotel, The Red Horse Hotel and the Falcon Hotel.
As a sign of the times it appears the Shakespere Hotel is now the Mercury Shakespere and the Falcon Hotel is The Legacy Falcon Hotel and both are in Chapel Street, Stratford-upon- Avon. The Welcombe Hotel on the Warwick Road is now the Menzies Welcombe Hotel with a spa etc. The Red Horse Hotel appears to have closed although there are several mentions, info and pictures available on the web.
It seems worth mentioning once again, (as elsewhere in this Guide), that of the seventy plus AA Approved Landing Grounds of the 1930s almost none appear to have survived the Second World War and nearly all the garages no longer exist today. On the other hand the hotels appear to be remarkably resilient and the majority remain in business.
