CLYFFE PYPARD: Military aerodrome

Military user: RAF Flying Training Command             50 Group

29 EFTS [Elementary Flying Training School]     (DH Tiger Moths)

Location: 3.5nm S of Wootton Bassett

Period of operation: 1941 to 1947

Runways:  N/S   1006   grass           NE/SW   1061   grass
                   E/W  1219   grass           NW/ES   960   grass

NOTES: Quite typically the only occurrence of note at many training aerodromes is a tragic accident. A very good friend brought this news to my attention. On the 2nd March 1943 a Tiger Moth landed on top of another Tiger Moth, (presumably about to take-off?), killing the British instructor and New Zealand student. They are buried in the local churchyard.

As pointed out elsewhere I am appalled by the attrition rate suffered by pilots, and aircrew, undertaking training. Why a major memorial has not been erected to reflect the ultimate price paid in Training Command, by so many, is I think a disgrace to our aviation heritage.
