Coleford flying sites

COLEFORD see also EASTBACH FARM

Note: This map only gives a rough location within the UK, but it should give a fairly good idea of where it was located. If anybody can confirm this, or provide a more precise position, this advice will be most welcome.

COLEFORD TUMP: Private airfield (also known as either EASTBACH, TUMP FARM and/or BIG SMEADS)

Period of operation: 1950s to late 1970s?

Landing area: A large square field with no runways as such it seems

NOTES: This appears to be the first airstrip/airfield established in this area operated by Mr Hubert Knight who established the Knight Flying Group from the 1950s to the mid 1970s when the Tipsy B Srs.1 G-AISA, Tipsy Belfair G-AOXO, Tipsy Belfair B G-APIE, Taylor JT-I Monoplane G-APRT, Piper J3C-65 Cub G-ATKI and Piper J-3C 65 Cub G-BDHK were based here.

On a visit in my truck to collect an aeroplane during 2005 to EASTBACH (SPENCE) AIRFIELD I learnt that BIG SMEADS – COLEFORD TUMP (TUMP FARM) – EASTBACH airfield was situated about half a mile S of the present EASTBACH (SPENCE) AIRFIELD.
