Colyton

COLYTON: Landing Ground (permanent)

Location: Roughly 1.5nm SW of Colyton asnd about 2nm NW of Seaton town centre

NOTES: The existence of this Landing Ground came to light on a Ordnance Survey Aviation Map published in 1930 which I had been very kindly loaned. In those days the map didn’t differentiate between military and civil airfields.

Indeed, because most civilian pilots in those days were from the very wealthy if not aristocratic strata of society, from which most of the officers in the RAF also felt they belonged, it was seen as being quite normal, (with a few exceptions), for civilians to 'pop-in' for a visit, pee-break and perhaps tiffin of course, either simply for fun or perhaps en route.
