NOTES:  After the Armistice ending WW1, the emphasis for joy-ride operators was mainly on seaside resorts. The problem then arose of how to keep flying, and the public interested, during the rest of the year. The answer, mostly, was to take the operations inland, to the people, as close to where they lived as possible. This venue being a good example.

A list of where Gliding Can Be Seen published in 1930, gave this location. "The North Staffs Gliding Club. Week-ends at The Cloud, Congelton." We do not know for how long this location was used, nor exactly where they launched from. If anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be most welcome.

CONGLETON: Military airstrip

Military user: US Army 742nd Field Artillery Battalion

Location: Just NW of town outskirts

Period of operation: 1944 only?

Runway(s):  ‘All over’ grass airfield perhaps?
