Cottenham flying sites
Note: This map only gives an idea of the position of the WW1 Landing Ground.
COTTENHAM: Military Landing Ground
Military users: RFC/RAF (Royal Flying Corps, later Royal Air Force)
75 [Home Defence] Sqdn
Notes: This Squadron was initially flying Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2c, later the B.E.2e and later still the F.E.2b. Towards the end they also flew the Avro 504K and Sopwith Pups. However, I have no idea if all of these aircraft flew from here. If any advice can be kindly provided, this will be much appreciated.
Location: Near the B1049 and NW of Cottenham village, NE of Rampton village and roughly 5nm N of Cambridge city centre
Period of operation: 1916 to 1919
Site area: 85 acres 603 x 329
COTTENHAM: Private airstrip?
Location: About 5nm N of Cambridge
NOTES: I was told of a rumour that a Spitfire has been seen landing here in 2002, which may well be correct of course.
But, was it more probably a Piper Cherokee or something similar?. For example I was once reported, to the airfield security, to be flying in with a P-52 Mustang, when landing at Bentwaters. (If only!). In fact I was flying a Cessna 172!. Any clues about a possible strip in this area?
