Cotton

Note: This map only shows the position of Cotton village within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide an exact location for the airfield, this will be much appreciated.

COTTON: Military Landing Ground

Military user: RFC   (Royal Flying Corps)

51 [Home Defence] Sqdn
Note: During this period 51 Squadron were, it seems, certainly flying the Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2, and possibly the B.E.12 at the time?

Location: E of the B1113 (probably?), near Cotton village, 5nm NNE of Stowmarket

Period of operation: 1916

NOTES: It would appear that 51 Sqdn used this Night Landing Ground from October to December only in 1916. Many of these WW1 Landing Grounds were basically just farmers fields with only the most basic facilities, hence the reason some only operated for a short period of time. Being unsatisfactory it was re-established at ELMSWELL about 12nm WSW.
