Military users: RNAS/RAF Home Defence Flight Station        RAF Marine Operations Station

273 Sqdn from 1918  (Airco DH.4, Airco DH.9 and Sopwith Camels)

Location: About 4nm NNE of Southwold

Period of operation: 1916 to 1919

Site area:   82 acres

NOTES: It appears that COVEHITHE was initially a satellite airfield for RNAS GREAT YARMOUTH, (73 Wing), used as an 'on demand' site. Mainly a NLG (Night Landing Ground) for anti-Zeppelin duties.

In 1918 it was assigned to 4 Group, (RFC/RAF), and this is where 273 Squadron comes into the picture. If anybody can kindly offer advice of what was happening prior to 1918, this will be much appreciated.
