Creetown

Note: This map only gives my estimate of the position. Close enough I suppose for a position within the UK, but hardly satisfactory. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact location, this advice will be most welcome.

CREETOWN: Civil Landing Ground

Operated by: Her Grace The Duchess of Bedford   (Based at WOBURN ABBEY, BEDFORDSHIRE)

Location: 1nm N of town, E of A75, N of disused railway station. Presumably fairly close to Cairnsmore House?

Period of operation: 1930s only?

Runway: Max landing run:   613   grass

NOTES: Info source ‘AA Landing Grounds’ publications and one of the AA (Automobile Association) approved Landing Grounds.

It seems that fuel and transport (typically a taxi service) was available from James Latta’s Garage in Creetown and hotel accommodation (and the nearest telephone) was also available in Creetown. It seems that one hangar was on site but it is not certain this would be available to visitors flying in.

Please see my listing for CAIRNSMORE HOUSE for the story of the first visit the Duchess made by air to this area.
