CROFT:  Private helipad

Operated by: Alec Wortley Ltd  (A W Helicopters)

Location: Beside B4114, adjacent to Fosse House, 1.5nm SSW of Narborough

Period of operation: 1970s & 1980s

NOTES: Many years ago I made these notes: "It appears that two Bell 47s were based here. This being the case what era are we looking at? 1960s? 1970s? Possibly later?"

In early 2018, when adding this site, I decided to delve a bit deeper, and what an amazing story came to light. Initially Dr Alec Wortley became interested in helicopters in 1976, and arranged to charter a Bell Jet Ranger for fifty hours, ostensibly to augment the tax bill for his company. Initially he had helicopters landing in his back garden - see seperate entry with pictures - ASHFIELD HOUSE.

Deciding to get involved in a helicopter commercial business, he purchased an ex-Army Bell 47G (XT221), and had it converted to civil use as G-CHOP. He then purchased another - G-BGMU. The story seems to end in the early 1980s? If anybody can kindly add further information, this will be most welcome.
