Operated by: BEA

Location: Just W of Cromer town centre, by the Coastguard Station

Period of operation: June to September 1948

NOTES: This mail service started and ended at WESTWOOD aerodrome in Peterborough, and was really quite successful throughout. It appears that of the planned 570 scheduled calls only twenty-three were missed. Six for technical problems requiring precautionary landings, seventeen due to bad weather.

BEA (British European Airways), was very forward thinking in the early days especially, and imported three Sikorsky S-51s and two Bell 47s from the U.S.A. to experiment with helicopter services to areas devoid of any half-decent road or rail connections from the east Midlands. Such as Norfolk and Suffolk.

It appears that the Sikorsky S-51 G-AKCU was used on the first service. Possibly it continued to fly the service?

The outbound service departed at 10.00 from WESTWOOD and routed via Thetford, Harleston, King's Lynn, Wells-next-the-Sea, Sheringham, Cromer, Norwich and finally to Great Yarmouth.

The inbound service left Great Yarmouth at 17.55 and called in at Lowestoft, Beccles, Norwich and Dereham before heading back to WESTWOOD.
