CRUGMEER: Military aerodrome (Aka RAF PADSTOW and TREVOSE HEAD)
Note: In April 2023 I paid a visit to this location. Typical Cornish weather, low dense overcast and raining.
Note: The main purpose of the visit was to take pictures of the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust memorial. What a splendid group of people they are. The local area view is from my Google Earth © derived database.
Military users: RAF (Royal Air Force) and RNAS (Royal Naval Air Service)
RAF Marine Operations Station
Location: On Trevose Head which is a headland, roughly 3nm WNW of Padstow
Period of operation: March 1918 to March 1919
Site area: 50 acres 457 x 503
NOTES: Originally intended to be a RNAS aerodrome when under construction in February 1918 but handed over to the RAF in May when it opened.
It appears that this airfield was used mainly for maritime patrol duties. But, as virtually no enemy threat would have been evident, I wonder what was the purpose of these patrols?
