Danson Park
DANSON PARK: Gliding site
Note: The local view was obtained from Google Earth ©. The local area and area views are from my Google Earth © derived database.
Operated by: North Kent Gliding Club
Location: Just N of the A2, just SE of Welling, about 3nm SE of Woolwich town centre and roughly 4nm WNW of Dartford town centre
Period of operation: 1920s to 1933
NOTES: This was an interesting period in the development of gliding in the UK. Without too much doubt, as was common in those days, gliding in locations such as this, comprised a group of enthusiasts launching a glider by means of a bungee cord by running down a convenient slope. The 'flight' being mostly of a short duration.
I expect this was the case here because it was hardly a suitable location for soaring. But of course, given a stiff wind, perhaps those pilots could remain airborne for a period? As always in this 'Guide', if anybody can kindly offer advice and information, this will be most welcome. And indeed, are there any pictures available?
