Derby Airfield
DERBY AIRFIELD: Civil aerodrome
Note: All pictures by the author unless specified.
Operated by: Derby Aero Club
Flying School: Derby Aero Club & Flying School
Location: 6nm SW of Derby
Period of operation: 1992 to –
Note: This map is reproduced with the kind permission of Pooleys Flight Equipment Ltd. Copyright Robert Pooley 2014
Runways: 05/23 528x20 grass 10/28 456x20 grass
17/35 602x20 grass
Note: In 2001the TORA, LDA and other restrictions make this a most unusual licensed airfield. For example the longest runway 17/35 prohibits take offs from 35 and landings from 17. On 05 the TORA was 356m and the LDA 430m and the reciprocal 23 had a TORA of 445m and a LDA of 341m. On runway 10 the TORA was 276m and the LDA 306m. On the reciprocal 28 the TORA was 293m and the LDA 291m. These are extraordinary short lengths of runway for any licensed airfield let alone one used for flying training.
NOTES: I visited by road, delivering an aircraft, and then flew from here on the 23rd of September 2004 in the Cessna 152 G-BRND and can confirm it does indeed seem to be a very successful operation. Half surrounded by trees and other hazards it does seem to be a very good place to learn to fly from. After learning to fly from here surely nearly everywhere else is easy to visit.
A SINGULAR VISIT?
Note: Whilst trawling around on Google Earth looking for evidence of another flying site in this vicinity, I was astonished to discover this picture, apparently taken in 2003? The dating on Google Earth is not usually reliable of course. I can find no other mention of this airship visit. If anybody can kindly offer advice, this will be most welcome.

Ian Wallace (I spelt it wrong in my previous message) and ? Van der Elst. I also remember Miss Mary Agar. I have Captain Cramp's book and it makes very interesting reading.

This comment was written on: 2021-01-21 15:42:06Adding to the entry for DERBY AIRPORT, it's worth noting that the ORIGINAL Derby Airport was a grass airfield at BURNASTON, home of Derby Airways/Derby Aviation, who operated Dakotas and four-engined Argonauts from there. (Note, this is the airfield in the book by B.G. Cramp, referred to below). This airfield closed in 1965, after which the TOYOTA vehicle assembly plant was built on the site. Not to be confused with the CURRENT Derby Airfield which opened a few miles away, in 1992. Hope this info is helpful. Regards, Dave Peace ..
