A Guide to the history of British flying sites within the United Kingdom
get in touch

Dones Farm

Note: This map only gives a rough location within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide a more exact position, this advice will be most welcome.

DONE’S FARM: Private airstrip/airfield later temporary aerodrome

Location: In Cefn Road, top of Hullah Lane, Abenbury Fawr near Wrexham and about Inm S of BORRAS LODGE FARM

Period of operation: Possibly private prior to WW1?           Commercial: 17th to 29th April 1930

Runways: 1930: ‘All-over’ airfield with, broadly speaking, minimum distances of:

N/S   337   grass           E/W   464   grass

NOTES: In April 1930 Berkshire Aviation Tours made a prolonged visit advertising 5/- passenger flights where passengers could ‘See Wrexham from above’ as well as ‘Daring Exhibitions of Aerobatics and Crazy Flying’ and - ‘Simultaneous Wing Walking’ for the first time in Great Britain!

SOME HISTORY
It also seems that at least one member of the Soames family used this site for private flying prior to WW1. One such person was presumably Capt A H L Soames who became a Squadron Commander at the CFS UPAVON. He was killed in July 1915 when evaluating new types of bombs with the Experimental Flight - also based at UPAVON?

It also appears this Landing Ground was used by Sir Kenneth Crossley.

A PLEA FOR HELP
Can anybody now add further information regarding this site?
