Donna Nook

DONNA NOOK: Military aerodrome           (RLG for NORTH COTES)

Military users: RAF Coastal Command               16 Group

206 Sqdn   (Lockheed Hudsons)

Location: Adjacent to southern shore at eastern end of the Humber estuary, 12nm SE of Grimsby

Period of operation: 1936 to 1945  (some say 1950?)

Runways: NE/SW   1280   grass           NW/SE   1463   grass

NOTES: I’d certainly never heard of this aerodrome before researching this 'Guide' but yet again another UK airfield with a name that could so easily be from a childrens story book.

It must have been a fairly major operation, even in 1944, with 1485 people stationed here in plus 104 WAAFs. Apparently initially a Relief Landing Ground for NORTH COATES 1936-1950. Other sources say it closed in 1945.

Donna Nook was also the site of an Air to Ground weapons range which may now have closed.

I don't know exactly where the airfield was but I think I've 'found' the 'range control' site for the weapons range. Go north from the marker and you see a place marked 'H Arundel & Co'; just north of this is an area with some buildings with what look like 'checkerboards' painted on the roofs together with a large tarmac area with an 'H' painted on it. The range is still in use by the RAF and USAF.
