Dunsley
NOTE: The map gives just an approximate location. If anybody can provide a more precise location this will be much appreciated.
DUNSLEY: Civil Landing Ground (aka WHITBY)
Operated by: Mr Keith Pyman, Thornaby Hall
Location: 2.5nm W of Whitby town centre, in/near Dunsley village?
Period of operation: 1930s only?
Runway: Max landing run: 329 grass
NOTES: Info source, ‘AA Landing Grounds’ publication, 1930s and one of many AA (Automobile Association) approved Landing Grounds. Rather unusually a hangar was listed on site but it is not known if this was available to visitors? But, looking at maps it does seem rather odd that this Landing Ground was named DUNSLEY simply because fuel and transport (typically a taxi service) was from “The Garage, Sandsend”, the hotels were the Sandsend Hotel and Beach Hotel, and, the nearest telephone was the Sandsend Post Office.
The coastal village/town of Sandsend, on the A174, roughly 2.5nm NW of Whitby is about 1.25nm roughly N of the village of Dunsley and the villages of East Row and Raithwaite are nearer to Sandsend. I haven’t been able to locate Thornaby Hall but it seems likely, looking at the above information, that this Landing Ground was probably NW of Dunsley village?
