Dunton Hall
DUNTON HALL: Private strip and previously Forward Landing Ground?
Location: Near Curdworth, SE of Sutton Coldfield, NE of CASTLE BROMWICH and roughly W of where the M6 toll road splits from the M42
Note: This picture from a postcard was kindly sent by Mike Charlton who has an amazing collection. See, www.aviationpostcard.co.uk
All attempts so far to discover who and what the Midland Air Services enterprise involved has resulted in dismal failure. If anybody can offer advice, this will be most welcome.
NOTES: This seems an ‘odd-ball’ case. 605 Squadron records, (it is said), record a 503 Squadron Fairey Fawn crashing at DUNTON HALL Forward Landing Ground on the 4th March 1928.
This was near or the location of a private strip operated by Mr Bill Breedon in 1931. It is also said the Alan Cobham ‘Tour’ displayed here on the 9th & 10th June 1935.
Later on it is claimed the Klemm L-25-1 G-AAXK was based here in 1939 when owned by Mr John Wynn. Other notable aircraft using this site in the 1930s were Tomtit G-ABOD, Comper Swift G-ABPR, BAC Drone G-AEJS, and DH Moths G-AAFI and G-AAKI. Allegedly the Moth G-AARI was also here for a period?
