Dyers Farm
Note: I need to be very careful here. The location given on this map is taken from Google Earth where an airstrip is clearly evident. However, is this actually DYERS FARM? I will be very grateful if somebody can confirm this or correct my mistake. Without any doubt, in the 21st century, this airstrip is known as BREIDDON.
DYERS FARM: Private airstrip
Operated by: Mr T Ieuan Evans
Location: NW of Pool Quay which is a village on the A483, 3nm NNE to NE of Welshpoool
Period of operation: 1970 to -
Runway: 17/35 470 grass
NOTES: This is another example whereby various clues can become confusing. On a road map published in 2003 an airfield named as POOL QUAY is shown just SW of Pool Quay and yet nothing is shown for WELSHPOOL! But road maps don’t normally show private airstrips do they? Is this then another example whereby road map makers have not done a proper job? Missing WELSHPOOL but still showing POOL QUAY must surely be regarded as a major bloomer?
A BASIC APPROACH TO THE SUBJECT (AND HOW THINGS CHANGE)
Many years ago I made this comment in my notes: "Those purists amongst you might be asking why on earth I am still using road maps for location reference. The answer is simple - I am producing a 'Guide' not intended for specialists and road maps are probably what many people will use to see where many of these listings are." Incidentally I wrote this before installing Google Earth, Google maps and finding an increasing amount of information on the 'inter-web. However, not all of this can be trusted and basic cross-checks with maps and written sources are still of great value.
WAS DYERS FARM ALSO KNOWN AS POOL QUAY?
In the mid 1970s, (before WELSHPOOL opened), just one aircraft was listed as based at POOL QUAY – the Morane Saulnier M.S.880B Rallye Club G-AXCN registered to the Severn Valley Auto Group.
On the other hand WELSHPOOL aerodrome was listed as being operated by Pool Aviation in the early 2000s, so presumably there is a connection here?

My father Ieuan (not Leuan) was part of the group and also the farmer of the land. We had many lovely trips up and down in G-AXCN and now unfortunately it is all a distant memory.
Reply from Dick Flute:
Hi Helen, Many thanks for getting in contact, and I shall of course adjust the spelling. It has of course always been my intention to record as many farm strips as possible, having done a fair bit of strip flying, simply because it is such a rich and essential part of the British aviation legacy. My best regards, Dick

Also flew from Trevor Pugh's strip which was a mere few hundred yards away on the other side of the main road where I later kept my Baby Lakes. There were five strips I knew of within hardly more than a mile or two of Welshpool then. And a lot of lovely down to earth people who happened to be not as literally down to earth as you might have thought. Great days.

This comment was written on: 2019-09-06 21:46:13Oh, I realise I should have helped you out: Pool Quay, north of Welshpool, was an alternative designator for Ieuan Evan's strip at Dyer's Farm. What became Welshpool Airport began as Rob Jones's strip at Trehelig Farm, south of Welshpool. Two quite separate places among the five I mentioned. No error on the part of map makers.
