East Dereham flying sites

Note: This map only gives the position of East Dereham within the UK. If anybody can kindly provide advice regarding more exact locations for these two sites, this will be much appreciated.

EAST DEREHAM: Temporary aerodrome?

NOTES: East Dereham is listed as the venue used on the 23rd September 1933 by Sir Alan Cobham’s No.2 Tour.

EAST DEREHAM: Temporary heliport

Operated by: BEA  (British European Airways)

Location: ?

Period of operation: June to September 1948

NOTES: In 1948 BEA started an air mail helicopter service from Westwood Airfield in Peterborough to various destinations in Norfolk, also including Thetford, Cromer, Norwich and Great Yarmouth. The fleet comprised three Sikorsky S-51s and two Bell 47s.

It appears the service continued until early 1950. So, if my information is correct, perhaps East Dereham didn't generate enough traffic. For its day, this was a very brave and far-sighted project.
