Military users: RN Deck landing training School

Location: Just S of Nether Kelly village on A92, 3nm SW of Arbroath

Period of operation: 1943 to 1946

Runways: 18/36   969x27   hard            09/27   928x27   hard
                14/32   914x27  hard

They also had a ‘low visibility’ runway:   05/23   1116x27   hard

NOTES: I assume of course that runway 05/23 was for use only in low visibility conditions, (as opposed to being difficult to see!), but why the distinction just for this one runway? I have not come across another airfield which has this particular distinction regarding runways.

When operational it must have been a fairly busy place with 1166 Navy personnel based here including 482 WRNS.
