Easter Cawder Farm
EASTER CAWDER FARM: Temporary aerodrome (Aka KIRKINTILLOCH)
Note: All four of these maps and pictures were kindly provided by Mr Michael T Holder
Operated by: Sir Alan Cobham's National Aviation Day Tour
Note. Mike Holder found this promotional article published in the Kirkintilloch Herald on the 25th April 1934, before the display
Location: WSW of Kirkintilloch town centre
Period of operation: 4th May 1934
NOTES: Sir Alan Cobham's National Aviation Day display Tour had visited Kirkintilloch the previous year, but used BIRDSTON FARM on that occassion, and that was with the No.2 Tour. However, the 1934 Tour was not split into two Tours after the first couple of months. (As were the 1933 and 1935 Tours). Even so, with this venue being the 21st planned to be visited, that Tour was scheduled for 159 venues.
It was remarkable that, due to adverse weather, very few displays were cancelled. We don't know how many, but it was very few. Given the weather we have in the U.K. that is an astonishing achievement. But of course, the very best pilots of that era thought nothing of 'scud running' at very low levels to get from one venue to the next. And of course, there were very few restricted areas of airspace and they all (?) operated without a radio. Perhaps the 'airliners' used had one, but it was of little to no use. The displays certainly were not conducted with any kind of radio control.
