ECCLESFIELD: Military Landing Ground

Note: This picture (2017) was obtained from Google Earth ©

I have the Airfields of Britain Conservation Trust to thank for pin-pointing this location.

Military user: RFC  (Royal Flying Corps)

33 [Home Defence] Sqdn    (Royal Aircraft Factory B.E.2 possibly F.E.2)

Location: Roughly 3nm N of Sheffield city centre

Period of operation:   March to October 1916

NOTES: It appears that 33 Sqdn used this site as a Night Landing Ground from the spring to autumn in 1916. Having been established as a suitable airfield for military use I suppose it’s quite acceptable to believe, (see entry below), that it might well have been used for private flying?

ECCLESFIELD: Private airstrip perhaps?

Location: Ecclesfield is now part of Sheffield city environs, about 3nm N of the city centre

NOTES: There does seem evidence that a private airstrip existed in this area before WW2. Is anything else known?
