Eden Gate Farm

Note: The map only gives an approximate position of Eden Gate Farm.

EDEN GATE FARM: Very temporary but deliberate landing site

Operated by: Captain Arthur Meredyth Wynne

Location: Very near Warcop village which is on the B6259, roughly 4nm SE of Appleby-in-Westmorland

Period of operation: May 28th, 1918

NOTES: It seems that Captain Wynne flew a B.E.2 from SHAWBURY to visit his parents at nearby Habergill. The field he chose was owned by his grandfather. His arrival caused much local interest and a large crowd gathered to watch his departure the next day.

Captain Wynne was very lucky to escape from many adventures on the Western Front and was in fact severely injured, but not enough to prevent him instructing at RAF SHAWBURY for “light flying duties”, as a night-flying instructor! I deeply love this stuff - it seems to me that a book should be written giving the full account of what this man lived and experienced.
