Elstow

Note: This map only gives the position of Elstow within the UK.

ELSTOW: Temporary airfield

NOTES: In early 1910 a Mr H P Saunderson is listed as being experimenting with a ‘Monoplane’ here. Is anything more known?

Presumably a village in those days, ELSTOW is now situated just south of the A421, E of the A6, roughly 2nm S of Bedford town centre and pretty much a suburb of Bedford.

SOMETHING TO CONSIDER
I suppose the important lesson we need to learn today about this period is twofold. The first being that only four major aerodromes existed in 1910; BROOKLANDS, EASTCHURCH, FARNBOROUGH and HENDON, but even these were just getting going.

The second being, isn’t it extraordinary to discover that about two dozen other early aviators, (at least), had made their own arrangements. This one being a typical example long since forgotten about.
