Note:  Both of these pictures were obtained from Google Earth ©, the second from my Google Earth © derived database

Operated by:  The United Steel company until 1968. Possibly by British Steel later?

Location: Just N of Emmanuel Road, just S of the steelworks, and roughly 2nm SE of Scunthorpe town centre

Period of operation:  1960s certainly, possibly into the 1970s?

Runway:  12/30   Probably around 630 metres?    grass

NOTES:  We have Mr Graham Frost, a great friend of this 'Guide' to thank for pointing out this location.

It appears that United Steel operated three aircraft, without too much doubt, all of which used this airstrip. These being:

G-APMY    Piper PA-23A-160 Apache    (Registered 15.05.58 to 18.10.68)

G-APXK    Piaggio P166   (Registered 08.03.60 to 13.03.68)

G-ATAL    Dornier DO.28B-1   (Registered 28.01.65 to 28.11.68, then to British Steel 12.12.68 to 02.06.71)

OTHER VISITORS

It appears the de Havilland DH104 Dove 6, G-AMZN, made visits. This was something of a 'company hack' being registered to the de Havilland Aircraft Company from 15.05.53 to 01.07.63. Then to Hawker Siddeley Aviation from 17.07.63 to 04.10.65. Presumably flying designers and project managers to discuss steel specifications.

It also appears the Cessna 337B, G-AVJG, made at least one visit. This was mostly registered to Rogers Aviation, based in Bedford, between March 1967 to May 1969. Perhaps United Steel were considering purchasing one?
